How to Take CBD Tincture - VO Inc

CBD is becoming more and more commonplace in a fully stocked medicine cabinet, but not everyone knows how to take CBD tinctures correctly. CBD tincture dosing isn't exactly as straightforward as downing a softgel or edible, but it has some unique benefits that you can’t get from other types of CBD products.

Luckily, learning how to take a CBD tincture is pretty simple, and doing it correctly can help you get the most out of your CBD dose. We'll break it down in 5 easy steps:

Step 1: Understand Your Dose
Step 2: Check Product Potency
Step 3: Measure and Drop Under the Tongue
Step 4: Hold Before Swallowing
Step 5: Wait for Benefits
Can You Mix CBD Tincture with Food and Drinks?
FAQs on CBD Tincture

Key Takeaways

  • CBD tinctures are meant to be taken sublingually, which means you drop the oil under your tongue.
  • You can also mix CBD oil into food or drinks, but you may lose some of the benefits of the sublingual dosing style.
  • Flavored CBD tinctures make it easy to take a CBD tincture, even for those with a picky palate.

Step one: Understand What Dosage You Need

Understanding what CBD dose you need can be difficult, especially if you aren't very experienced with CBD oil yet. We recommend using a “low and slow” experimental method to find your best dose.

Start with a low dose, between 10 and 25 mg, and increase your dose as needed until you experience the complete benefits of CBD. To learn more about why dosing varies so much for every person, read our CBD Dosing Guide.

Step two: Compare Your Dosage Needs to the Product Potency

Now that you know how much CBD you should take, you'll need to check that against the potency of the product you choose. This is one of the most important steps in learning how to take CBD tinctures correctly because tinctures have the widest potency range of any product on the market.

Generally speaking, tinctures come in 30 mL bottles. That means that a tincture that contains 1,000 mg of CBD per bottle, will contain thirty 1 mL doses at 33.3 mg of CBD each. Similarly, a 500mg tincture offers thirty 1 mL doses at 16.6 mg of CBD each.

The beauty of CBD tinctures being a liquid form of CBD is that they can be precisely measured to help you adjust the dose as needed. That means that you can take half a milliliter dose of a 500 mg CBD tincture and you will have ingested approximately 8.3 mg of CBD.

Our Vitality CBD Oil Collection offers three potency options to make dosing simple. The three potency tiers are:

Vida Optima Vitality CBD Oil Potency Guide

Mild Strength

Our Mild Strength Tincture contains 750 mg of CBD, or 25 mg of CBD per one mL dose. This mild dosage makes it easy to measure smaller doses, such as a half milliliter dose at approximately 12.5 milligrams of CBD.

Regular Strength

The Regular Strength Tincture is double the strength of the Mild Strength Tincture. At 1500 mg per bottle, you can easily measure one milliliter doses that contain 50 mg of CBD.

Maximum Strength

The Maximum Strength Tincture follows the same pattern, doubling the potency of the regular strength tincture. At 3,000 milligrams per bottle, you can measure out one milliliter doses that contain 100 mg of CBD.

That’s quite a lot for new users, but at approximately 5 milligrams per drop, it may still be an easy-to-measure dosing option for anyone’s dosing needs. That means you can buy in bulk to save, and still get the precise dose you need—a benefit that’s unique to CBD tinctures.

Step three: Measure and Drop It Under Your Tongue

Once you've determined how much of your product you need to take to get the correct dose, use the attached dropper lid to measure out the correct amount of CBD tincture and then drop it under your tongue. This method, called sublingual dosing, allows the CBD to be directly absorbed into the bloodstream through the mucous membranes under the tongue.

Unlike CBD edibles, which need to be digested before they can reach the bloodstream, CBD tinctures will take effect quickly when taken sublingually. Sublingual dosing may also increase the bioavailability of CBD, which means more of the CBD you ingest will actually reach your bloodstream instead of being filtered out during digestion.

All CBD edibles absorb in different ways, and some sublingual style edibles may offer the same fast-acting, potent benefits of CBD tinctures.

Step four: Hold for 60 Seconds Before Swallowing

In order to ensure that the CBD is fully absorbed into the bloodstream, hold the tincture under your tongue for at least 60 seconds before swallowing the rest. Any CBD that was not absorbed sublingually can then be processed by digestion so that nothing goes to waste. If you have trouble with the flavor of a natural CBD tincture, try a flavored CBD oil, like our Tangerine Flavor Vitality CBD Oil.

Step five: Relax and Wait for Your Dose to Kick In

Now you just kick back and relax and wait on your CBD dose to take effect. As we mentioned, CBD tinctures generally take effect more quickly than digested edibles when they're taken sublingually. This means that you can expect the effects from your CBD tincture to kick in after approximately 20 to 30 minutes. You should feel the full effects of your CBD tincture dose by the one hour mark.

If you're still experimenting with your CBD dose and you don't notice any substantial benefits after 1 hour, you may consider increasing your dose next time you take CBD. The effects of a CBD tincture can last anywhere from 4 to 6 hours (and sometimes longer depending on a person's metabolism), so make sure you allow plenty of time in between doses.

Can You Mix CBD Tincture in a Food or Drink?

If you aren't fond of the sublingual dosing method, you may be wondering whether you can take CBD tinctures by mixing them into your favorite foods or drinks.

Technically, yes, you can ingest a CBD tincture by mixing it into pretty much anything edible. However, you are unlikely to get the benefits of sublingual dosing when you take CBD in this manner. Instead, it will act more like a CBD edible, which means it may take between 1 and 2 hours to take full effect.

If you're trying to avoid the taste or texture of a CBD oil, you may consider a CBD edible that melts in your mouth and allows similar benefits to a CBD tincture’s sublingual absorption. Our CBD Chews and CBD Lollipops are great examples of these types of products, and they don't require any measuring or guesswork.
